Why You Should Belong

Why do I belong to The American Legion?

I joined 27 years ago out of a sense of patriotism and support for my fellow veterans. I knew several veterans at the time and enjoyed the comaraderie. Mostly, it was a social attraction.
Through the years my affiliations and attitudes changed. I transferred from a post that placed their priorities on profits rather than principles. I found myself at a post with fewer members but large in heart and dedicated to service. The opportunities were many and I eventually found myself wearing the Adjutant pin.
Volunteering time and labor can be challenging as well as rewarding. I find satisfaction from helping people. To assist just one person locate the help they need or provide transportation for someone who is not able to travel on their own to their appointments or to provide financial assistance to those whose luck has taken a bad turn or to be present for a family who has lost a loved one, even when no words are exchanged but the simple gesture of a hand shake or a hug speaks volumes to those who are hurting and their gratitude is rewarding beyond measure. Let’s not forget our unexpired oath and our obligation to each other as veterans of the armed services of a great nation, even though it’s greatness is sometimes obscured by the attitudes of a people who sometimes forget that the freedom we enjoy comes at a price paid for by the blood of other men and women who gave their lives for the cause of liberty. I feel a strong sense of obligation to their legacy and also for doing whatever is necessary to insure that those who served and returned are treated with dignity and respect by the institution they pro-tected.
By serving in The American Legion each of us demonstrates to our community the commitment we share in maintaining a strong, patriotic and free America for generations to come.

This is why I remain a member of The American Legion.

David Bogner – Adjutant
